Donkey Punch Review

Out for the count?

Despite the smutty connotation of its title, – if you don’t know what I mean, try googling Donkey Punch (ahem) – Smooth Landon’s latest is an innocuous enough little app in the Doodle Jump mould that, thanks to its duo of wacky characters, absurd sense of humor, and simple tilt controls, should appeal to a younger audience of iPhone gamers.

Its delightfully daft premise should tell you everything you need to know about Donkey Punch (out now, $0.99): A cheeky monkey swipes some food from an unassuming looking donkey, little does he know that said donkey is in fact former world champion boxer, D.P. Wurchowski. Miffed, Wurchowski comes out of retirement and with a mighty blow sends monkey flying.

What follows is some fun, if a tad overly familiar, accelerometer powered gameplay. As poor little monkey soars upwards, by tilting your device, you must grab as many items as possible – bananas, poo, etc – whilst riding on air currents in order to maintain momentum.

Donkey Punch features six modes, each humorously titled (Constipated,
Git Yer $%* to Mars), and each of which put a slightly different spin on the core gameplay. For example, by introducing zero gravity into the equation or removing certain power-ups from play. Beyond that, Donkey Punch also includes the obligatory OpenFeint achievements and leaderboards.

Okay, it’s nothing groundbreaking, but Donkey Punch’s crudely animated double act and simplistic style of play will definitely keep the little ‘uns amused. Worth a look.

iFanzine Verdict: While Donkey Punch’s irreverent sense of humor and bizarre characters hit the mark, its core gameplay feels under-polished and a bit dated. All in all, an inoffensive enough attempt at putting a comical spin on the how high can you go? style game.
