Eerie Worlds is a Monster-Themed Tactical CCG from Avid Games

Cards, the Universe and Everything is a funny, gently mischievous, and happily enlightening encyclopedia in tactical CCG form.

Eerie Worlds, the hotly anticipated follow-up from developer Avid Games, is all of those things but with an added fixation on monsters. Not made up monsters, either, but a gruesome cast of monsters and apparitions from real world mythology.

Converging on our universe through a series of interdimensional rifts, these monsters include international superstars like the Kelpie, El Chupacabra, Bigfoot, the Gremlins, and the Jackalope.

But you’ll also meet a few monsters you’ve probably never heard of before, like Kuchisake-onna, the Blue Men of the Minch, Abhartach, the Morrigan, and Mami Wata. Eerie Worlds is truly cosmopolitan, with monsters representing all four corners of the earth.

Your goal is to collect these monsters and send them into battle. Each monster is represented by a card, complete with a meticulously researched description on the back that reveals its origins and the kind of mischief it’s known for.

They come in four different Alliances—Grimbald, Zerrofel, Rivin, and Synnig—and each monster also belongs to a specific Horde. For example, Kuchisake-onna and Jikininki belong to the Japanese Yokai Horde, while Vodyanoy and Psoglav represent the Slavic Horde.

Gameplay-wise, the aim is to play these monster cards against each other in brisk nine-stage battles, with each move taking up to 30 seconds. You can take nine monster cards and one world card into each fight, drawn from your Grimoire.

Like all good CCGs, Eerie Worlds is accessible but fiendishly deep. Every time you play a card you need to consider positioning, synergistic effects, the amount of Mana you’re spending, and more. 30 seconds flies by.

At the time of writing Eerie Worlds has 160 monster and world cards, though the number you can reach by merging and evolving cards is much more. Avid Games has already promised another four sets over the next two months, with more to follow after that no doubt.
