Beasts With Powers
When loading into the game, you can select 1 out of 6 beasts to play as, with each having unique rules or powers. However, if you don’t like the look of them, you can play in Amalgam Mode, which allows you to create a custom beast.
You play on a game grid made of 5 land types. Each beast engages differently, so you need to be strategic. There is more to it than just simply moving across the board, though.
With 4 different types of invaders, you need to be careful. Each has its own behaviour and actions, so you need to plan ahead and think about your next move.
There are also 6 weather cycles that can happen, with each having an impact on the invader and/or on the beast you are playing as.
Game Mechanics
For those who prefer an element of surprise, the rules of the game and how the different mechanics work are hidden. This way, you can figure it out for yourself and discover how it works through multiple playthroughs.
However, if you feel stuck, worry not. There is an in-built guide available if you need additional help.
Review
I will admit, I have already played Eldermyth! I’ll give you my thoughts below to try and tempt you more if you aren’t already tempted.
Grid games aren’t the usual type of game I go for. However, I thoroughly enjoyed Eldermyth. I love that you can select the mythical beast you play as, and each is unique with its own powers. I found myself thinking a lot more about my strategy on each turn.
Speaking of turn, I loved the turn-based gameplay. I enjoy this mechanic in games anyway, so seeing it in a grid game was extremely unique and refreshing. Eldermyth is definitely bringing something new to the field of roguelike games, and it’s a game I will continue to play!
