The iFriday Roundup, No. 21

Game of the Year Awards Roll In, Sales Follow!

Congrats to HotGen, who were in touch to let us know that To-Fu 2 took a Runner-Up slot in Apple’s yearly Rewind! Kudos also go to EA’s Dead Space, which took iPad Game of the Year and has gone on sale until the 10th — iPhone version included! Also taking top honors on the iPad is Chillingo’s and Mokus’ Contre Jour, which comes as no surprise to us. Apple’s yearly Rewind is presented on a country-by-country basis, so be sure to check your own App Store account to see which games were honored in your neck of the woods.

Young Hearts Run Free

EA’s hit 2.5D runner, Mirror’s Edge, is currently free at the App Store! Judging from Ru’s review this is one you’d do well to run right out and download if you haven’t already. And don’t forget, EA has so many sales going at any given moment nowadays that they’ve devoted an entire website to them!

jAggy Race On Sale, and the Price is Definitely Right!

If you’re on a tight budget and you’d rather hop into a gravity defying go-kart than strap on your running shoes, SevenOnly is all too happy to help. Ru called this one “Dizzyingly brilliant”; “sublimely unconventional”; and “fiendishly inventive” all in the same article! If that’s not a recommendation, we don’t know what is.

Tiny Defense Going for Tiniest Possible Price

Genre fans who overlooked Pictosoft’s ultra-by-the-book approach to the Tower Defense formula may want to have another look now that it’s available for absolutely free! The game has also become Universal and received some tweaks since our review.

Act Quick! This Sale Won’t Last Forever!

Kemco is shaking things up in the App Store’s RPG library, adding meaty retro-style JRPGs at breakneck pace. Sean recently reviewed the first in their lineup, Symphony of Eternity, and noted a fine character class system that probably would have received much more attention were it not for the game’s uber-premium price tag. Now Kemco’s lopped the price down to $0.99 for a limited time, so if you’re a genre fan this is one sale you’ll want to take advantage of! In other Kemco news, Eve of the Genesis just landed on the App Store yesterday and is also enjoying a mighty release sale. We’ll have a review on the other side of the weekend!

An Awe-Inspiring Sale

Sean was pretty awe-stricken when he reviewed Anomaly: Warzone Earth, the Tower Defense game where you destroy the towers rather than set them up. Chillingo has placed this wonderful collaboration with developer 11 bit studios on sale for $0.99, so if you’re a Tower Defense or RTS fan who hasn’t picked this one up yet, now’s the time!

Playd Officially Launches

A few weeks back we interviewed app developer Anthony Frasier to get the lowdown on this social gaming app, alternately likened to “foursquare for Gamers” and “a check-in app for gamers on ‘god mode'”! Playd was still in beta testing at the time but has now officially launched on the App Store. We’re especially keen to find out what Playd will look like when it supports iOS as a gaming platform and not only a distribution platform, and we would encourage developers to check in with Anthony via the Playd website in the meantime to find out how they can get in on the action once that happens.

iDamaged Submitted to Apple

iDamaged, which promises to be the best arcade-chicken-walker-mech-action title on iOS, will be in the hands of AT-ST fans everywhere very soon! If you’re a longtime reader TheRedThing’s debut title needs no introduction, but if you’ve just discovered iFanzine you can read our hands-on previews here and here. Don’t forget there’s still time to sign up for the iDamaged release notification email at TheRedThing’s site, and be in with a chance of winning the game for free!

Idyllic Tournament Announced

FatCow Games were in touch to let us know that they’ve launched a tournament registration form for players of their infinite jumper, Idyllic. We’ll fill you in on more details as they become available, but for now we know it’ll be way more fun than your average frog jumping contest and that there’s a $15 USD iTunes gift card up for grabs! Registration lasts until January 5.

iOS Mascots Invading YouTube

You know how Geico commercials used to be about the car insurance, and then they became about the gecko? Now you can watch as this celebrated branding tradition unfolds in the land of iOS, with Cut the Rope’s Om Nom and FatCow Games’ namesake engaging in strange dimension-crossing antics for the sake of entertainment as advertisement. We’re keeping our fingers crossed that TheRedThing will follow up with a 50-foot mockup of the iDamaged mech.

Tongue Tied Releasing December 15

Mojo bones were just in touch to let us know that they’re unleashing the stretchy-tongued hounds next Thursday! Check out our interview with Mojo Bones’ Stuart Ryall in the meantime, and don’t forget that they’re still running their doggie bag contest! Let’s leave you with a walkthrough video the dev shared with us, so you can see how the game plays exactly:

Are you an iOS videogame developer or publisher with a cool update, video, or other news that you want to get out to the masses? iFanzine probably has an eye on you already, but don’t hesitate to get in touch via our Twitter feed or Contact page. We want to fill our iFriday Roundups with all your beautiful stuff!
